I reflect on gardening and land management work as I go—because it’s my day job and things go more smoothly if I do this!—so expect seasonally relevant posts, balanced with behind-the-scenes research. Generally, this means I spend more time reading and winter botanizing and planning during the colder months, and I take more photos and share hands-on information during our growing season here in the Northeast.
If you live in the Northeast or Mid-Atlantic regions of the East Coast, I’ll share resources you can put to use quickly. I’m always excited about community science, history, and ecology: I’m fascinated by the messy ways these intersect in gardens.
Who are you?
I’m Claire and I’ve been working as a gardener and garden designer for 13 years in the Hudson Valley of NY. I first learned that being outside (as a job!) was possible as a college student in Southern Vermont, where I studied ecology and literature, but I have been a hiker, camper, and flower fan since I was tiny. Places where I’ve worked, managed, or learned include Locust Grove, Stonecrop Gardens, Wave Hill, and Longue Vue Gardens in New Orleans.
I am a longtime walker and appreciator of home gardens, and my work is guided by the ingenuity of other land stewards and the function and beauty of the plant communities I interact with daily. I’ve hosted book clubs, walks, and workshops at public gardens and shared gardening tips on Gardenista.
